I was an active member of the Santa Barbara electronic bulletin board scene starting in 1987, when the Internet was still just a twinkle in Al Gore's eye.

We had intermittent meetings in the flesh--we called these meetings "Q's", because although the first one was a barbecue, the rest weren't. We named them according to the restaurant where they were held...everybody remembers the Woody's Q when Rosminah embarrassed her date by recounting how she forced him to shave her legs.

Almost everybody used an on-line "handle," and I have no idea of the real names of most of these folks. On the other hand, several of them are my good friends to this day.
