Early in 1979, Lee Iaccoca, the new president of Chrysler, fired the BBDO ad agency. Since the agency basically had no other accounts in the Detroit office, the agency laid off all the employees. But they kept me on for an extra 90 days to service the account until the new agency could get ads and commercials ready.

I had plenty of offers of copywriting jobs at other Detroit ad agencies on car accounts, but I was sick of Detroit and wanted to get back to California. At the end of June I packed my typewriter and clothes into my car and drove back to Santa Barbara.

I stopped in Provo, Utah, to visit my sister Mary and her guy Ray.

We went canoeing.

In Santa Barbara I swiftly found an apartment on San Pascual street near Mission Street and resumed my career as a freelance copywriter.
