"Those glasses were a personal triumph. They were the first pair I'd been allowed to choose that weren't either pink or pastel blue catseyes, with rhinestones at the tips. Those were the two choices Mom gave me. The crooked smile was a result of the fact that I'd very recently split the area just above my upper lip almost to my nose in a small accident. When it happened, it bled. I thought it was merely cut; went to rinse my mouth and the water squirted out of the split. Whee. That was also when you sent me the radio from Sears, and told me that the Farmington buildings had been burned down."
