Eikon Thin Film Hard Disks Back when hard disks were an exotic new product, Eikon built one of the first fully robotic production lines. I patterned the first page of the brochure to look like a Scientific American article to explain the new thin-film plating technology. Thin film hard disks were mostly vaporware at this time, so I emphasized the existence of an actual physical production line already in operation. One day when I was walking through the factory, I found a barrel of scrap disks--mirror-like, perfect jewels, except they failed some test or another. In order to once again prove that the company was not vaporware, I silk-screened a thousand disks with the invitation to the grand opening of the factory. The grand opening was a grand success--the Los Angeles Times had a front-page story about it in the Sunday business section. |
